Wanaka

This past weekend me and some of my flatmates went up to Wanaka. We left Friday afternoon and got up to Wanaka just before sunset so we climbed Mt. Iron which is right before getting into town. There was a cloud cover so we couldn't see the mountain tops but we were able to see into the valley. For dinner we went to a Speight's Ale house like the one I went to at the beginning of the term. The food was really good and so was the beer. I got a chocolate ale. The guy at the bar asked me if I wanted a small glass of beer. It made me laugh that that was an option and he thought to ask if I wanted it. Saturday we got up early and headed up to Treble Cone ski area. Graham and Abby are really good skiers so they helped us get gear and a 2 hour lesson and then went to ski by themselves. Rebecca, Erin, and I had a lesson on the bunny slope with all of the 4 year olds. Well the three of us were with one instructor who let us skip some of the small stuff because we were able to stand up and go down the "magic carpet". The magic carpet is a moving carpet thing that you stand on and it takes you up about 20 yards and then you go down the little hill. We learned how to stop and turn in the lesson but were not able to make it up the lift. After lunch Graham and Abby took us up there and skied with as all the way down. It is very terrifying to ski in the clouds and you can't see the edge. The easiest run followed the snow cat route down so it was a lot of switch backs. I made it down and only fell 4 times the entire day. After skiing we walked around town and got take away and watched the sunset. Sunday Graham and Abby skied again so the rest of us hiked Rocky Mountain. It was rocky and muddy because of the all of the snow that has melted. Next weekend is the last weekend of the season. At the top we were able to see the lake and the mountains all around.
