Film Festival

There has been an international film festival in Dunedin for the past few weeks and I have gone to see a few films. I really enjoy the film festival because I can see cool movies that are not the huge blockbusters. And they are shorter so I can stay awake during them. Here are the films I have gone to see.

Antarctica: A year of ice
This was a film shot over about 7 years in Antarctica using time lapse photography. It showed what is was like living and working at the US and NZ bases there. The film maker there worked on the communications satellites so he showed how bad the storms got in the winter when they had to go fix them. The film also showed what it was like to live there in winter when it is 6 months of complete darkness. After watching this I really want to go to Antarctica for a summer to work (everyone there is there to work, not just vacation).

Blackfish
This film was starting to make headlines in the US with relation to the Finding Nemo sequel. It's about the orca, Tilikum, who killed the trainer at Seaworld last year. They look at the whales past and question why this whale is still at Seaworld and used for shows. He has a killed and hurt other trainers in the past but they still have him and use him for breading. I think they said that about 25% of Seaworld's whale are related to Tilikum. It was really interesting to see what had happened and the perspective from former Seaworld trainers who used to work with the whale.

Romeo and Juliette: A love song
This was Romeo and Juliette at a trailer park/campground where everyone sang the lyrics. There were no spoken words. It was a New Zealand film that was made near Auckland. It was really ridiculous because of how they dressed and the fact that it was rapped using Shakespearean English. I normally do not like Shakespeare at all but this was a really fun way to see it. It also made me pay attention to song lyrics.

I know these are not very good descriptions of the films so if you want to know more about them, just look it up online :)

Here's an ad in the program. It made me laugh because sometimes subtitles are for karaoke :)
