Weekend adventures

So I started my weekend by going to the Jaffa race down Baldwin St. This is the last event of the Chocolate Carnival. There were a lot of kids there because they weren't in school and a lot of international students from Otago. There were two races, each having 25,000 Jaffas in it. I bought a Jaffa for the race but mine did not place in the top 5. They had to sweep down the street between the two races and it took them about 15 minutes to do so.

One of my friends wanted to go kayaking in the harbor so I agreed to go with him. We were on the water for about 2 hours in a double kayak. The guy we rented the kayak was kind of reluctant to let us go. He really wanted us to wear wet suits but we were wearing polypro. clothes instead. He made it very clear that if we fell in get to shore and get warm. Also, if there was any problem, go to shore and call him. He felt better about letting us go when Alex told him he does crew back home. The harbor is really shallow and the water was really clear so we could see the bottom the entire time. It was cool because we could see all of the shells, bivalves, and plants. There was a plant that looked like balls strung together. We also found a few shells that looked like conchs. There was also very little trash in the water. We found a bucket and a few traffic cones. There were some cones that were standing up so they might of been there on purpose. It was fun to see the peninsula from the water instead of by car.
There were a lot of different birds out on the water. I don't know what they were but there was one that looked like a small heron. By the boat ramp there were seagulls fishing.

After kayaking we headed to the rugby stadium to watch a game. I heard about the game from a friend who heard about it from campus watch. It game was the club rugby final between Taieri and Dunedin. I thought I knew enough of the rules to follow the game but realized I don't know the rules. We are getting a rugby lesson before the All Blacks game in October. Taieri was ahead for the entire game but at the end Dunedin pulled ahead and won by 1 point. At the end they presented medals to Dunedin and the 3 referees. But before the medals there were speeches by the league officials, the referees, the captains for both teams. It was funny listen to the speech by the losing teams captain.
